1. Why do I need Travel Insurance?
One usually travels abroad for various reasons- a pleasure trip, a business trip, a study trip etc. You do not want anything to ruin your hard earned holiday, foreign study or your crucial business meeting. But there is a possibility of some unexpected occurrence no matter how perfect the planning is. Unfortunate events such as baggage loss, passport loss, a medical emergency or an accident can affect you. Having Overseas Travel Insurance protects you from all such perils. It ensures that in the unknown foreign land. You are not left stranded in any kind of an emergency.
2. What is a TPA?
TPA stands for Third Party Administrator. The most essential service they provide is cashless medical services. They also provide the necessary information to deal with any problem regarding claims.
3. When does the cover begin?
The Insurance Cover commences on the day specified in the Policy Schedule or the time you board the conveyance to leave for onward overseas journey or the Contracted Departure Date as per the policy, whichever is later.
4. Till when is the policy valid?
Insurance Cover shall terminate (i) with the end of Insurance Period i.e. the period for which the premium has been paid or (ii) when the insured person first disembarks on return to India although insurance companies provide the benefit of Automatic Extension of the Policy if the completion of the insured journey is delayed solely because of a failure of public transportation or other services upon which the insured was reliant.
5. Do I need to carry the policy along with me?
You are advised to carry the policy along with you when traveling. This would make it handy once any claim arrives. But most important the policy details should be known to the insured when traveling like policy number.
6. Is medical exam necessary for travel policy?

Note: If the insured is falling under the criteria of Medical Examination and not able to produce the Examination due to urgency for travel then only a person can be insured without giving any exam for a limited sum insured on the sole discretion of an insurance company.

7. From where do I need to get all required medical exam?
Although there are no specified list of Doctors/Clinics/Hospitals/Labs to get the medical exam but The New India Assurance Co. Ltd. Has its own list of Hospitals from where medical exam has to be done and these tests are to be verified from the Doctor M.D. only for all the companies.
8. What type of Medical exam required?
Normally three tests are taken by the insurance company e.g. E.C.G., Urine and Blood Sugar test but the required tests may be change from company to company depending upon the type of case.
9. In case medical treatment is required, is there any need for any pre-approval before hospitalization?
You would need to contact insurer�s third party administrator and they would arrange for the cashless claims for the medical treatment. In case cashless facility is denied for whatsoever reason may be, you can still apply for the reimbursement of your medical bills.
10. Would I be reimbursed for the medical expenses incurred abroad, if I go specifically for the purpose of seeking medical treatment?
The insurance covers you only for accidents or sickness which happen unexpectedly and unintentionally while you are traveling abroad. This is to ensure that you have sufficient peace of mind during your overseas trip. This policy does not cover planned Medical Expenses / Treatment overseas.
11. In case I don't want the policy anymore, can I get it cancelled?

Cancellation of policy can come in two ways:

Before Departure:

You can get your policy cancelled only by giving a Request Letter* stating valid reason for the cancellation of trip and the cancellation charges towards administrative expenses would be deducted from the refundable premium which may vary from company to company.

After Departure:
You can get your policy cancelled only if you have not undertaken the journey and you produce your original passport as a proof that the journey has not been undertaken. Any such request of cancellation will be entertained up to to be filleds after the first date of insurance as indicated in the schedule of the policy and the cancellation charges towards administrative expenses would be deducted from the refundable premium which may vary from company to company.
12. What if I loose my baggage how do I claim?
TPA has to be contacted to register the claim. You will have to submit the loss baggage claim form along with the supporting documents from the airline.
13. What if in an emergency I don't have time to call up?
TPA should be contacted by any person within 48 hours and given the details about the insured.
14. Do I need to take travel insurance each time I make a trip or is one policy valid for multiple trips made over a period of time?
You can either choose a Single Trip or Multiple Trip policy. If you choose a Single Trip policy, the cover will be valid for the duration of the specific trip, (as selected by you). If you choose a Multiple Trip policy, the cover will be valid for one year from the start date of the policy. The maximum duration per trip under this option can be 30, 45, 60, days or 90 days (as selected by you, which may vary from company to company).
15. Can I continue my treatment of same disease happened during my travel abroad in the home country after expiry of my policy?
If the Third Party Administrator advises that the continued treatment in the republic of India is appropriate, then the company will pay the medical expenses incurred in India for the same illness/injury contracted abroad following the transportation to India, for a maximum period of time vary from company to company from the date of return to the Republic of India, provided that the illness/injury is sustained or contracted within the period of insurance during the trip abroad.
16. If I am evacuated on ground of medical reason, can I continue my treatment in India?
If recommended by the claims administrator and subject to medical sum assured remaining, the company will also indemnify the insured in respect of the medical expenses incurred by him within India to continue medical treatment commenced by the insured outside India, immediately prior to any medical Evacuation. The company’s liability to make payments hereunder shall be limited to a period of time vary from company to company.
17. Is there any plan without Medical Cover?
Yes, Plans are available only for students.
18. Is there any plan which covers Drugs Abuse, Cancer Screening, Inter collegiate sports, child care, Mental & nervous disorders, pregnancy?
Yes, Plans are available only for students under ICICI Lombard (Gold & Silver Plus plan) and Cholamandalam (student’s plan)
